ALMA, Wis. (WKBT) -- A Fountain City woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a school booster club appeared in court Thursday, where her attorney requested a mental competency evaluation before moving forward with the case.

Christina Foley, 52, faces one felony count of theft for allegedly stealing $13,200 from the Pirate Booster Club, which supports Cochrane-Fountain City schools. During Thursday's hearing, Foley's attorney requested the competency evaluation.

Buffalo County Judge Susan Geiger granted the request and ordered the evaluation.

A competency hearing is set for July 23.

The theft was first reported to the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office in August. According to the criminal complaint, Foley served as treasurer for the parent-run booster club when she allegedly wrote four unauthorized checks from the organization's account. Three checks were made out to "cash", and one was written directly to herself.

When questioned by law enforcement, Foley explained she had suffered a brain aneurysm in 2021 and was dealing with financial struggles. She told investigators she was facing mounting medical bills and expenses from storm damage to her home that required replacing a septic tank, a wall and siding.

Foley drafted an apology letter to the booster club, according to the complaint.

Foley remains free on a $1,500 signature bond.
